Why do rabbits have long ears?

The rabbit’s ears serve two main functions.

  • They help in monitoring the environment and in detecting sounds from even 3 km distance apart.
  • They assist in thermoregulation, as rabbits do not have sweat glands. Their over-sized ears have an extensive blood vessel network. These vessels swell when the rabbit feels hot, favouring heat loss, and contract when the rabbit feels cold, restricting the heat loss.

Wonderful creations, aren’t they?

Do you own a rabbit? Please share your experience in the comments section :D!

Have a Wow Day!!! 🙂
